125 WOT problem

I have 88 Force on Bayliner 17'. I bought it with a nice stainless prop running 13x15. The engine seems to run great, there is a little cutting out just off idle and at idle it runs only off lower 2 cylinders (tested by pulling plug wires while idle and checking for change in rpm) but once past this spot, it runs smooth but can only reach 4000 rpm at wide open throttle and about 40 mph. I know the operating range should be 4500-5500.

I have replaced plugs, sprayed out carbs with carb cleaner, is there a fuel delivery problem? does it need fuel pump? Or rebuild the carbs? Also I have read that Force ran on only 1/2 cyclinders at low rpm to save fuel is this true or am I up in the night?

Background I bought the boat during last winter knowing it needed lots of work. I replaced flooring, carpet and all upholstery, and fixed power tilt and changed oil in lower unit. It seems to run good just won't reach operating range? Any hints, also it may have sat for a year before I got it but engine was pretty clean with very little problems.

Re: 125 WOT problem

Dave,

I've got the same motor on my 84 Bayliner. Check the compression on all 4, I've heard of these engines running seemingly well with low compression on 1 cylinder. Check the basics... timing, spark etc. These carbs are notorious for stuck floats.

If all else fails, I found a great resource on themarinedocotor dot com

I never heard of running on two cylinders to conserve fuel, these engines are of such an old design, somehow I find that hard to believe.

Please post an update, I'd love to know what happened.

I am replacing a few parts I should have done earlier. The fuel filter looked clean but when I pulled it apart it was hard to blow through lots of sand plugging it up and also the squeeze bulb. It squeezes fuel up easy enough but within 10 secs it is drained back out. Once I replace those 2 I will take it out again and see if it improves.

These motors do not shut down any cylinders at idle.

Could be a carb problem, or a stator that is starting to fail.
