Default spark plug gap for mariner 40 2 stroke

hello all! could someone help me I have recently purchased a boat with a mariner 40 outboard, i was told to change the spark plugs so i did trouble is the guy in the shop told me to set the gap at 1mm the engine was hard to start but run well when it started. i have since been told the gap is way to big but have been given several different settings can some one please give me the correct gap. it is a mariner 40bhp s troke around 1989. many thanks .

.024 would be the gap...
