Go ahead and troll with it, but don't baby it. Run the daylights out of it until it's broken in. You can troll for a thousand hours and the motor will never break in. You need at least ten hours of hard running, but every hour helps. Try Nippondenso plugs if you can find them.

I've got the same motor. Just curious - when I bought mine the salesman spent about 20 minuted going over break-in procedure (the manual has very specific instructions on how to break in) Your salesman must have skipped that step. I'd start over and follow the instructions step-by-step. I've trolled with mine extensively since breaking it in without problem, but I sure didn't troll it longer that 1 or 2 minutes during break in.

When I say "troll" I mean long periods of idleing in gear. I don't use a plate as I have an electric trolling motor. Sounds as if you followed procedure for break in. (I didn't mean to imply that you didn't) I always thought that a 4-stroke should idle without loading up and fouling plugs like 2 strokes tend to. The manual lists 2 choices for NGK plugs. LFR5A-11 & LFR6A-11. The 5A is the hotter plug. If your's came with the 6A, switching to the 5A should help. It's my opinion that you won't damage a 4 stroke with prolonged idle. Otherwise, how do you like the motor so far? I love the fact that the transom isn't covered with a film of oil after a day on the lake and I never get a whiff of burning oil, although it's not a quiet as I expected.

I love the motor. It's got plenty of get up and go which I never had before. My wife especially likes the fact that she doesn't smell the exhaust. I finally got to talk to someone at Mercury marine that seemed to know what they were talking about. They also told me that I should be able to troll with this motor with no problem at all. Sorry it took so long to respond but I have been having a hard time logging in. Thanks for the info.
