HELP PLS- I have a 2001 28' Trophy with dual Mercury 150HP Optimax engines. The problem is that I keep getting overheating alarm and lose power. It has done this the past two seasons and I have managed to get by as explained below but it has gotten too frustrating. I have taken it to several mechanics, spent lots of money but the problem still exists. The engines start fine and run fine for a few minutes THEN after running a few minutes at about 1800-2000 rpm the alarms go off. Alarms go off if i put the trottle in neutral. If it catches right, I can hit full throttle and they run great until I slow down and troll for a few minutes. If I turn the engines off, restart them then hit full throttle, they run great at higher rpm until I slow down again. It doesnt seem to make sense thast the engines are overheating as I would have probaby blown them running at the fast speeds I have done. Here is what has been done recently after a frustrating alarm episode.
1. took it to shop- they said water in gas was problem. replaced all fuel filters, and installed water separators for each engine. Did not fix problem.
2. took it to shop. Replaced both water pumps. Port engine works fine. Same problem on starboard engine.
3. Mechanic goes on water trial with me. Same problem. He pulls wires to bypass things, checks things, checks oil reservoir. cannot determine problem.
4. take to shop to clear all codes. do water trial- has same problem.
5. Replaced popit valve and both thermostats on starboard engine. Replaced air filters.
6. Water trial- same problem. Port engine still running fine now.
7. Mechanic calls Mercury for some ideas and we plan to go out on water on Monday- check oil reservoir again, check lower unit and water pump again, and is taking heat gun to take temp readings (It had not been overheating at least to touch).
