What size/kind battery should I get to use as just a starter for a 40 HP Force outboard? I am using a separate deep cell for the accessories and trolling motor.

Any size 24 will be more than sufficient.

I believe that although you will not be using that battery for deep discharge (like trolling motor) it should still be marine battery to handle the vibration and shock that batteries in a boat take.

You can probably get away with an auto starting battery for starting only duty, but it may fail early due to vibration and shock.

A plain old $29.99 car battery will be just fine. The one in my boat is now 9 years old and still works perfectly. This is with an inline 6 outboard, which uses more amps to start than most diesels, and then fries the battery with 16+ volts from the alternator. Even a lawn tractor battery would probably work...
