Hello All, Yes! I'm a newbie

I just bought a 1987 Johnson 6hp engine, model J6RCUD. I have no manual with it. and the previous owner had no clue of how to operate it. So here I am!

My ? is this! info pertaining to the steering arm. From the red tip where you insert the start / kill switch clip. what is the purpose of the piece that turns left or right between the clip and the throttle? I think it for adjusting the throttle position, would I be right?

my next ? is:

on the arm just behind the throttle handle is the throttle setting markings showing 2 arrows facing opposite each other in parallel with the arm, what does that indicate. My thoughts are it's for setting the throttle prior to starting? then to the left of that marking are 2 half round lines w/ arrows, I have not a clue as to what that marking means. Any info is appreciated. I ask cause I'm having a problem keeping it idle.

Thanks, Al

The little red thing on the tiller handle is for a lanyard kill switch. It should have a little red clip that slips into it from the side. The clip just pivots in there loosely but does not make for any adjustments. Possibly your motor may have an idle adjustment at the end of the tiller handle in the form of a adjuster knob. The two arrows are for the throttle position for shifting gears. The two half circles are the throttle position for starting the motor.
I hope this helps as I usually need this forum for info but this is the first time that I can actually contribute. Kind of feeels good for a change.
