Default Mercury Stator

Hello everyone, 1st time here- GREAT SITE.
My problem- I had a shop install a rebuilt power head for my 1985 Mercury Black Max 150 HP. Ran great for 4 outings, on the last one started out fine we stopped to fish for about 4 hours, then, it started right away, idles fine sounds good, BUT, it will not rev. past 2000 and will not go past 7 miles/hour. Pit-putted back to the dock. Out of water tested and it did the same rev. not more than 2000. Tested a second time and it reved fien upto 4500. Took it to test on the water again, starts right away idles fine, sounds good, but same prob. will not rev past 2500 and go more than 7 - 9 miles an hour. The shop is telling me its not the power head - they tested it (its under warranty) they say its a bad stator, I dont even know what this is. Are this symptoms related to the stator. What is the Stator and what is its major function, is it part of the power head if it is they shoud not charge me (they are charging me $332. to replace the stator)
Please help, spent $3000 on the rebuilt power head tired of spending money and my boat not running right. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for the long post. --- Carlos

Shop around for a stator. The shop probally considers the stor an electrical issue not associted with the powerhead. If they used a new stator they should have had some kind of warrianty. CDI/Rapair makes aftermarket parts at less expensive cost.

Same problem here! The engine runs great for a little wile and sometimes it doesnÂ’t. I have really been trying to find the cause of this problem and from my research the stator seems to be the most common issue among older two strokes ignition failure. I have found a few stators for $150 for my 90 hp (I was told that a 90 can use a 115 stator, but its not so great the other way around as it doesnÂ’t produce sufficient amount of current). But here check this out.

http://boatingsolutions.com/AB1430/s...2790&CATID=115.

I believe its rated for a 140 but will fit a few other power heads. But I have also seen used stators off of engines with mechanical damage separate from the ignition for 115 and 140 HP engines on Ebay for <$90. I have also read that while you are replacing the stator you should also replace the trigger plate.
They are easy to replace, remove the 4 bolts on upper engine cover, the six bolts on the flywheel and remove that, and youÂ’re in trigger plate and stator can be observed and easily replaced. But if you do attempt it your self (judging by your post you won't but) donÂ’t forget to readjust the timing after all is said and done!!!

Good luck with your engine (older 115Â’s are beasts) but PLEASE PLEASE Please..... Let us/me know your results as I have the same symptoms

I just replaced my stator on my '86 150. Picked one up on e-bay for 103.00. If they replaced the stator on the rebuilt powerhead, then I would certainly think it is covered under the warranty. I would read the warranty very carefully. If they used your old stator, then I can certainly see where they would not want to replace it free of charge. It's really not too hard to replace yourself if you choose to do so.
