I know this is an old post, but I have this exact problem. I have not tried 12vdc for 30 secs, but have already tried a new auto-by-starter assembly. I also checked for voltage on the plugs where it plugs in, nothing. I should have checked voltage prior, but after reading some threads was convinced this replacement would fix my problem. Anyone have any ideas? 2004 Nissan 18 HP Model NSF18B2. Looking at other parts now. I have a parts listing, but need a tech manual or something, or an answer. I am working backwards from the wires looking for a power supply for the auto-by-starter. Motor runs at idle when I put finger over hole where needle is inserted. Any ideas?

You need to diagnose the problem. Start with the Factory service manual, Part # 003-21041-0 $27.58. Actually test the ABS solenoid, and clean the carb properly.
