Hello,

We have a 170 HP Mercruiser that was running great and suddenly made a popping sound and stopped out in the middle of the bay. I had my tools/electrical tester and was unable to find 12 volts at the coil or spark plugs with the engine turning over. I noticed that the boat wiring harness had a large red reset button with the number 50 on it. I pushed it but still was unable to read 12 volts anywhere I had previously measured. A good Samaritan pulled us in but I can’t figure out what the problem is.

Turn the ignition switch to the run position, then with a DVM or test light, start at the ignition switch purple wire and follow it all the way to the engine. The purple wire is the one that puts power to the coil, and also will go thru a kill switch (With safety lanyard) if equipped.
