Your best bet would be to get a copy of the OMC shop manual for your engine. Your symptoms point to a fuel problem or air getting in the fuel lines. I would rebuild the carbs even though you had them done a year ago.

What do the plugs look like?

what ever you are adjusting with the screw driver is not the choke. it's probably the low or high speed mixture screws. not being mean. but obviously the two of you don't know what the ---- you are doing. get a manual and read it. before you kill a good reliable engine. go to the engine faq section and read everthing there. before you do anything else, then ask a guestion.
