I replaced the motor on my rototiller a couple of years a go with a Honda 5 hp motor. Has less than 5 hours on it. It is back firing when I started it up this year. First time for any problems. It was a little harder to start.

Any ideas as to what is causing this problem?

Just like Any other motor,........

Backfiring is Usually caused by a Lean condition.........

Probably Crap in the Carb.........

My guess is a busted flywheel key. If you remove the spark plug you can insert a pencil and turn the motor till the piston pushes the pencil out and just starts going back in. This is TDC. At this point the magnet on the flywheel should have just passed the iginition module. If not the key is broke. The part is only a buck but getting the flywheel off can be a real pain.
