I seem to hear a knocking noise when I decelarate from high RPMS's. The noice does not happen when I accelarate. Does anyone know what it could be? Also, can I anyone one give any advise on manuals to help tuneup and repair?
Re: Knocking Noise when decelarating (Mercury 115)
Could it be a clicking? The prop will click.

Re: Knocking Noise when decelarating (Mercury 115)
You are a rare one to hear this. Usually there are other noises that mask it.
I have mentioned it several times in talking about what my prop does. It's called "clutch rattle" and it's the clutch dog hopping over the sawtoothed teeth in the forward gear (down in the lower unit).
The forward drive in an outboard is liken to an agricultural implement that has an overrun clutch. Any time the prop goes faster than the engine, the clutch dog-forward gear teeth disengage; hence slip.
Early Ford tractors were the big users of a similar aftermarket accessory. If you didn't buy an overrun clutch, you couldn't stop the tractor or get it out of gear until the implement attached to the Power Take Off (PTO) usually a mower, stopped turning. I was thinking about bailing hay with a small Ford one day and didn't have one installed. Was going down hill and it didn't want to stop. Scary.
On a boat without it, every time you cut the throttle you would be thrown forward as the prop would stop turning at the rate the boat was moving and it would act like a brake.
