Motor runs, won't go past idle speed

I'm a novice. I have a mercury 15 HP outboard and it suddenly wouldn't go forward, except at idle speed. The motor runs and increases rpm's but the prop doesn't seem to want to speed up. I am clueless. When the boat is out and I move the prop manually, it does seem to go in gear. Any ideas?

Thanks,
John

It would sound to me as if the prop bush is slipping. Put a mark on the propeller nut and another in line with it on the propeller. Run the motor in the water in gear then stop it and see if the two marks still line up. If they don't then the rubber cushion drive in the hub of the prop has failed. You can get it rebushed but it needs specialist equipment or buy a new complete propeller.
