I'm considering a stainless steel prop because everything I've read seems to support getting one and keeping my existing aluminium one as a back up. Is this something I should get from a local dealer or can I get it online? Can I simply use the model number to order one or there other issues? My motor is a 1999 Johnson 25 HP 2 cycle, 3 cylinder.

I purchased a $400 stainless prop on Ebay for $110. Ebay is your best bet for a good deal.

Probably a waste on a 25 HP motor. No real benefit there.

Not so....
It's more of a waste to run a std aluminum prop on a high HP outboard than it would be to get every ounce of help from a 25 that you can.
The benefit of not having to repair a prop everytime you smack bottom, a stick, etc. will pay for an SS prop.
