Default Loss of Power - Force 40 by mercury

my force 40 is running well, however, I can not get the engine to move to full power / throttle.

We've had the outboard for 6 years & it was running well until last week. We had it running at high throttle & it slowed to about 10 mph by itself - with the throttle in the same position. Since then, that is the top speed of the motor. I can't even get the engine to rev high while using the throttle control.

I am able to rev the engine by moving the control myself with the cover off. I've tried new plugs, new gas, checking the gas line.

Again - the engine sounds good actually - it just has no power! Any sugestions?

OK - now the motor won't start at all. I had it out 3 times today - everything was fine (still had no power - as I originally posted). I went to take it out for evening fishing & it wouldn't start at all. It was getting gas, plugs are new, battery was charged last night. I'm frustrated! Help!

It is sounding like it wants to start, however, it just doesn't turn over.

How can I tell if it is sparking? Sorry - I'm new at trying to fix this motor - it's never given me a problem.

You can get a inline spark tester here:

Or just do a search for one.

Go to the Chrysler/Force page as this motor is NOT a Mercury.
