Default sylvan V171

Dose anybody have a 87 sylvan V171? How well? has it worn over the years? I just bought one last month and the further that i dig into it the more work I discover it needs.

Kindof the wrong time to be asking, huh? What kind of work are you talking about? I had the same experience when I bought mine brand new so it probably wasn't a bad purchase if that's what you're worried about.

I have a 87 sylvan v171, bought last year. It has a 3.0 Gm with a omc cobra. The boat is in very good shape. I had to recover seats and interior, some wood was junk just used as pattern and replaced it with treated plywood. Had the outdrive resealed and it needed prop shaft and u-joints, $1050 for that. Get a manual for your motor and it seams like the boat is well built. It seems any old boat is going to be work and money but it is fun,my family loves it and I don't have to second mortgage my home for it.

Hello,

I bought a V171 about 5 years ago. It had been left outside during summers. Gelcoat (red) was chalked badly but it did wheel out pretty well. I had new upholstery done for front area - also had to replaced wood bottoms on seasts and side cushions. In the back, I took out the lounge (back to back) seats, built new stands and used 2 pair of foam cushions to make new single seats. For the back I totally rebuilt making a 38" x 69" cushioned sundeck and a bench seat in front. My son is a carpenter and did a real nice job on this. We now have very nice storage areas on each side of the engine gunwalls. I totally stripped the boat and replaced the carpet. Looks really nice! I did have some soft flooring in the back on each side of the engine well. I decided it would be too much work to redo. Will keep boat inside from now on when not on the water.

I have blown the head gasket. Had head redone at machine shop. Did labor myself.

Boat runs nicely and we enjoy.
