Since this thread came back to life, here's my latest update. I was getting ready to put the boat in the water and saw that the shift bellows was shot. So rather than attempt the repair myself and quite possibly make a small problem worse, I took it to the shop. They got right on the job but it appears that the previous owner must have run the boat with the bad bellows. Gimble Bearing, shift cable and about $600 worth of other parts had gotten wet and needed replaced. So, paid the bill today. The good thing is that all this was caught before I dropped it in the water. Probably wouldnt have lasted an hour and I would have been looking for a tow and the repirs would have been much worse.Anyway, gonna put a new coat of bottom paint on Friday morning. Now the only last detail is finding a way to get the boat to the marina, 100 miles from here.Mark

Just got my 1989 220DA with a 260hp 5.7. Cruising at around 26 at 3000 RPM, topping out at 38 at 4000. I've heard that maybe the fact that I only get to 4000 RPM wide open could be a problem...and thoughts?
Well.I get about 22 @ 3200 RPM, I get about 4300 or so at WOT, but the boat doesnt go much faster over a bout 3900. I'm guessing you have more prop than me. I think my boat will only do about 33-34 mph. It's kind of hard to say because I boat in the Chesapeake and am always dealing with Tides and wind, not to mention always at least a little chop. I did hook up a Fuel Flo meter last weekend. I burn about 9GPH at 3300 RPM and about 23MPH.Mark

Hi guys....just joined the forum....I have a '90 220da (5.7 merc A1) I bought in April.....love the boat.....have added an extra bench seat and installed a new CD player with a powered sub woofer....just back from Lake Cumberland in KY....put over 120 miles on the GPS...boat performed great with 7people on board..I am getting about the same performance numbers as you all ( 24mph at 3000 rpm..35mph at 4200rpm)....have a stainless prop and a hydrafoil.....Dave.

right now i am running a 17 pitch ss prop my wot is about 4100 rpm at 34 miles per hour gps. .i think i need to put back 15 pitch ss to get me to my engine wot which is i think 4600 .
i might lost a little top end speed but i get on plane at 2500 rpm, and when i hit about 3800 rmp i was doing about 33 miles per and the engine sound more sweet . so guys the prop that gets you the 4600 wot is the right prop. remember the engine is not new anymore. so it dosent has that strong power any more.
also please post what size prop you are currently running, so others can troubleshoot.
but for those who dosent get the correct wot need to get the right prop that does. even if you have to go down to a 15x15 like i did, the engine will love it.
Just repowered my 89 220DA with a Jasper 350 w/roller cam. Still in break-in. Does seem to have a little more juice, but havent run it over 2000RPM. Hopefully after this weekend, I can start bringing her up on plane and see if the performance has changed. We are probably going to do a slow weekend cruise down the Bay 20 miles or so. That should just about complete the break-in.

Not real sure what happened. overheated. stopped too quick maybe. engine ingested lots of water, saltwater.
New engine is running great. Installation cost me more than I expected, but thats boating.
No cracks in the castings. I replaced the manifolds. Might have been a problem there too.
New engine is much stronger. Havent really opened it up WOT yet. The bay has been a little rough lately and the rest of the family doesnt like high speeds on rough water.

Well boys, after buying a nice GPS I'm getting some much different speeds than I was getting from the on-board speedometer...
I have a 14.5 inch, 17 pitch prop. I'm getting 29mph or so at 3000 RPM and about 41mph at WOT at 4400 RPM. Let me just say I love this boat! Handles the bay chop well, tons of room for a 23 foot boat, and fishes well without the rear bench. Now to just spend the money and get some decent canvas...
nice iam lelious guys iam only getting 29 miler per at 4200 rpm, mark the bottom of the boat might be a mess with barnacles. i hope thats is the reason. iam also running a 17 pitch prop,
bs220da please tell us what brand prop you are running. that is some great speed you are getting there, congrat.
keep it coming guys prop size brand and performance thanks
I just put a new engine in Aug. I can get 4500, but rarely run over 3200. I get about 24mph (GPS) at that speed. Any more juice and the gas consumption goes WAY up. I dont see much increase in speed above 4000 RPM. I'm not sure what prop I have. This is my first yr with this boat and I keep in in the water. Will be bringing it home around the beginning of Nov.
I spend most of my time at a slow cruise of about 1200 RPM. Gas on the water is expensive and things have been a little tight this Summer.

A 350 that only sees 3900 rpm at full throttle is working quite hard. Higher rpm (not too high) won't hurt a motor but lugging it will. Try propping it to get 44-4500 rpm with 2 people and 1/2 water and fuel. It'll be quick on plane and won't be lugging.
Rock Hall, have a 'prop guy' look at yours (your prop that is). Your numbers would suggest it's cavitating at w.o.t. possibly due to a slightly bent blade?
A healthy 350 in a 22' boat should run 40 mph. My 240 Sundancer (5.0/305 mpi) tops out at 42.
thanks for the info. Since my last post, I've discovered that I might have a problem in one of the cylinders. Looks like there was some oil getting in. I found this problem on winterization, so I wont be addressing it till Spring. #1 plug was completley fouled. It could not have been firing at all. So that is the first item of business in the spring. The motor is under warranty, so it will be taken care of.
As for the prop, I pulled the drive for the Winter. I am going to replace the prop. It's pretty chewed up. I will have this one repaired and save it as a spare. I'm not sure of the size and pitch. Just havent had time to take a closer look. I will post the specs later. I might get a chance to mess with it this weekend yet. The whole drive housing needs some work. So that is my project for the winter. I already have things lined up to take a look at the engine in March.
I boat on the Chesapeake. This past Summer, we didnt see alot of calm water to get out and open it up. Not to mention the price of gas. I'm looking forward to getting these little problems fixed and having a great Summer of boating.

thanks magster , i dont know if i might have problem myself, but with a nwe marage ss prop at the end of the season i was getting about 32 miles per gps at about 4000 rpm with three guys and a tank of gas.
i pull all spark plugs and it seems some of the is too clean, so i dont know if i have a bad head gasket, the oil is not milky either.
boat gets on plain real easy, too.
guys who fish on my boat marvel on how the boat perform great but to me its still not doing what its sopose to do.
this spring i will have the mechanic do a leakdown test to see if i have a headgasket problem ect.
all i need is for the boat to get to at least 4400 rpm wot with two guys on board.
Welcome fazer100, glad to see you again, I had wondered about you after SRO closed, I am the one from Isle of Wight, Georgia, USA. I would also like to invite you to join www.clubsearay.com most of the old SRO group is there also.
Hello all, I am in Connecticut and have purchased a 1989 22 DA 4.3 4barrel 205 hp,The engine was a factory 175 HP 2 Barrel. The origonal owner had the carb and intake upgraded. I was impressed on the sea trial, about a 4 second plane, cruising speed at 3200 will be about 19-20 knots, no need to over prop, will need the power for the rough seas.
I really like the design of the boat and am having new canvas made (6' 3" new bars to allow for walking room) I have removed the bench seat, installed two swivel captain chairs....Ooh more room! I am on the tail end of a full transom replacement, I found it to be rotted during a trim tab cylinder replacement. The cylinders were not sealed well to the hull allowing water to enter, Also the drain plug area was not properly fiberglassed at the factory,
Ground out the foam filled boxes, engine stringers, and the entire transom wood. Relaminated and replaced reglassed and cut outdrive hole. I have lots of picks and advice, it has really turned out beutiful and better than new!
I look forward to hearing from you all and will share my progress!
