I have a 89 35hp force outboard that blew a fuel pump gasket. It looks as though it burnt and warped the fuel pump housing. Why did this happen and is it repairable? after changing the fuel pump gasket ,it will not idle correctly and pops and backfires with no power. do you think this is a fuel problem or something worse? thanks for any help!

Re: 35hp force fuel pump

Is this fuel pump square or kind of like a figure 8? When you say you replaced the gasket did you also replace the diaphram? The stuff that looks burnt could be broken down rubber. Take the bowl off the carburator and drain the gas from the carb into a glass jar. Is there a bunch of black crap in there? If so you may have to take the carb apart and clean it out. If the fuel pump diaphram disintigrated the majority of it went into the carb. Should also replace all your fuel line while you are at it.

35hp should be the round/oval two stage pump used on most Force motors of the 80's.

It's the figure 8 type. there is no black residue, the diaphram was intact, but the plastic was melted and pitted around the hole. thank-you for your help!

Re: 35hp force fuel pump

I doubt that fire could have gotten into it without a serious fire onboard. If the casing is warped it probably cant be fixed. Only guess is that somehow too much pressure built up in it which would probably mean one or possibly all three of the fuel valves are toast as well. The valves are replaceable for about 5 bucks each and the valve gaskets are 50 cents each. You can look here for parts to determine what you need to fix it
Fuel pump 35 HP Force

Keep an eye out on ebay as well. There is almost always used fuel pumps there.
