New HeadGasket, now won't start

I've been working with this old Chrysler 75hp outboard motor. Model number 757HA. I had water coming out of the no.1 cylinder so I replaced head gasket and torqued to spec.(given on this great forum). Now before this, we had to break loose the frozen starter. Once we did that, it started right up on the first try every time. Now, after replacing the gasket, it will not start for nothing. Checked the plug wires to see if they are working-yes, checked to make sure fuel is getting to carbs-yes, checked for fuel getting to cylinders-yes. I cannot think of any other reason it won't start. Now, the starter was going, like I said, but it started flaking out on us. I took the starter apart, and it literally crumbled to pieces inside. Maybe 2 of the 4 brushes were still connected/intact. The commutator is corroded. The rest of the parts are all but disintegrated! I don't see how the thing even worked! Anyways, it turned the engine over adequately in my opinion but. I'm wondering if maybe it just didn't turn it over fast enough? That's the only thing I can think of. I'm no mechanic so I may be missing something. The electronic ignition module was replaced with a regular coil at some point but it did run. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Aaron

Can you get enough power out of the starter to test compression? Have you checked the flywheel key to see if it is broken? Are the plug wires hooked to the correct plugs? A starter for that motor is going to be around 150 dollars and that probably may not get your motor to start. Did you try and spray gas oil mix into the carbs and close the choke when starting?

Compression is good. If I turn it over with no plugs, it spins freely, and with plugs, it is more difficult. Turning the flywheel by hand is as difficult as before the gasket replacement. So, compression may not be perfect but is as good as before. Fortunately, the plugs were connected in the order they were routed through the bracket that holds them. Unless, we made a mistake.
No, I didn't try spraying into the carbs. How would I go about doing this? Just through the air intake? BTW, is there an air filter on these engines?
Aaron

How did you check the plug wires? I had a similar problem I installed a new head gasket and installed all the bolts with an anti-seize compound. I never realized anti-seize was such an excellent insulator. I had to install a ground wire to the head.

Ok. L.I. Chuck. This sounds interesting! I would have never thought of this. I did put a gasket maker compound between the head and gasket as the head was something like 400ths/inch off in the center. Maybe, I'm not grouned properly at the head. Excellent idea. I'll try and post results!
Thanks,
Aaron
