1995 Force 120. Bogging @ 5,000 rpm's

My boat is a low profile (1971), with a 120 Force Outboard. When I jump on it, and get up to about 5,000 rpm's, I start to bog down, when I let up, she picks up and runs fine. Also, when I hit the high rpm's the carbs are spitting out gas and oil. Does anyone have an idea what is going on? Are the floats getting stuck? :confused:

My first guess would be that the throttle cable may need adjusting. Check the position if the throttle valve (plate) in the carbs. When at full throttle, the plate should be horizontal. If it is not adjusted correctly, it can go past horizontal and start closing, restricting air flow.<br /><br />If they check out, inspect reed valves and rebuild the carbs.<br /><br />Hopefully someone else will also chime in with an opinion or two.

have you tried running it with the engine cover off, to let more fresh air in....see if that makes a difference....and then go from there...could also be that your timing is off...

max rpm is 5250 i dont even run mine a that rpm. risky risky.that might maxed out on rpm starving for fuel.

Spitting foam'fuel at high rpm is consistent with bad reeds.

I have never replaced the reed's before, is this something thats easy to do, or should I let a pro do it? (Question, I took my fuel filter off, to replace it with a new one. The new one only has an arrow on the out side of the filter. Does the arrow point to the lower carb? I should have looked before taking it off.) Just learning.

Arrow indicates the direction of fuel flow.<br />Yes you can change the reeds yourself, if you get a repair manual.
