'98 120 Force starter sticking

I have seen similar questions asked about this topic, however my situation is a bit different and I am looking for advice.<br /><br />Sometimes when turning the key, the starter will spin at the correct speed but will not pop up to engage flywheel. If I go back and lightly tap on the side of the starter it with a wrench, it pops up without a problem the next time I turn the key.<br /><br />This usually tends to happen at the ramp. If I'm out for awhile, shut her down at some point, and then try to start her back up, it typically works fine. <br /><br />I have seen the term "bendix" in some of my searching, I was wondering what that is and if it could be the problem?<br /><br />Any advice would be appreciated.<br /><br />Luke

The top part of the starter is spring loaded and the shaft is called the bendix. Crud can build up on this and prevent the gear to go all the way up. Best thing to try first is to spray the crap out of the bendix with WD 40 and use a rag to clean it. Then lightly oil it with oil. If this does not fix the problem look closely at the bendix and see if it is pitted or damaged in any way. If starter gear engages the flywheel but will not turn it then you will have to take the starter apart and clean it and verify the brushes, spring and comutator are all in good shape. Do the cleaning and oiling first then post your results <br /><br />Good Luck
