How critical is the exhaust tube seal?

I have a 1987 Force-85hp and when I recently worked on the L/U, I noticed up above in the motor leg that the exhaust tube seal was sliding down and out of position. (Now its sitting out completely.)

Mercruiserparts; Motor leg; Ref 8; Part # 25-F439736)
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...4162/22.png&inbr=1244&bnbr=80&bdesc=MOTOR+LEG

Do I have to redrop the L/U to replace this seal, or can I simply disassemble the motor leg to get to where the seal needs to go.

Basically, do I have to worry about this seal?...my gutt tells me yes...but the thought of ripping things apart all over again doesn't thrill me.

Re: exhaust tube seal

I would say yes, but try this. It will have no back pressure until in the water. Stick it in a body of water and see if it blows out exhaust where the seal is. That will give you your answer

Re: exhaust tube seal

It is needed as you will be drawing in exhaust gasses in with the fresh air and choking your motor!

Re: exhaust tube seal

I talked with the local marina mechanic last night. He said that the motor should be fine, however, it will probably lose about 10%-15% of the efficiency. (He said that the gasket helps with the back pressure as that whole exhaust cavity section was built specifically with the exhaust gasket in.)

Last night I tested it with muffs on and she ran ok. I'll take it out on the lake this weekend and see how she responds under pressure. If she dies, then it means removing the power head to fix that gasket...but for now...I'll wait and see how she performs.
