have a 1998 force 40hp, ser#0e326694, model 40ELPT,2 cyl., that I bought used off a pontoon boat and appears to have very few hours/wear but has rough idle and top end power is minimum and will not plane out a 15' boat. used alot of gas on short run. have done 'rebuild' on single carb which consisted of tear-down, cleaning, and gasket replacement. very simple carb, visually checked reeds which looked fine/clean. plugs are new and were dirty/oily/fouling after minutes of use. I need to know how to make this motor work correctly and if it is a timing issue or what. everything seems to be in order/place but running poorly at best.new prop is a alum. 12-10.5-3rh. any ideas? thanks, truhnfish@yahoo.com

Re: lack of power

Have a tach? What kind of rpm are you able to reach at full throttle?

If engine is running, but not coughing/sneezing/backfiring, it is not likely to be a timing issue.

What plugs are you using?
Should be Champion 5898 or NGK BUHW

Confirm spark on both cylinders,
check compression.
