This motor will start 1 out of 10 times in a test tank. When it doesn't start, there is no spark but the starter cranks and cranks. I followed the manual and with a volt meter checked the batery:eek:k, checked the starter: ok, etc. got to the ignition switch and it didn't register 12 volts. Manual said to replace. I replaced it and $32 later it didn't change anything. Still no start, no spark. Points are next on the list in the manual.... Doesn't look like an easy job so I thought I would solicit opinions first. Could this be a grounding problem? Any help is very appreciated.

I agree, they are not that bad, the hardest part of the job is removing the flywheel.

I took the flywheel off my '55 in 2003. One set of points were not opening. Sure ran better after I changed them and the condensers.

I recently regapped my points and its running like a new engine. I spent the time and made sure the gap didn't close after I tightened the screw. Made a HUGE difference.

Points were OK... Still no spark. I think the ignition is grounding out somewhere. I have run though the tests in the manual and probably am now out of my (mechanic ability)league so it's off to the boat mechanic.
