Re: Force 85 hp, 1989 model

I have the same engine and almost the same problems....had the idle issue (won't idle smooth or at less than about 1500 rpm (burp, idle,,burp, backfire, die).....no issue shifting though...I tried everything to get it to run properly, changed the head gasket, changed the exhaust plate gaskets (both jobs easy),...changed the impellor (easy)... decarbed the b-geeeeezus out of it all to no avail.....however I think I have hit upon the answer,....I removed all 3 idle mixture screws....they were gunked up...and cleaned them with 2 cycle carb cleaner and cleaned em smooth with a soft cloth and sprayed the stuff into the hole the jets came out of....I also changed from regular plugs to the flat (electrodeless) ones.....one or both of these things have cured the beast, runs like a real engine now..honest...give it a try.....there will be lots of other great advice from this site about how to cure your engines ills so pay heed...

Tim
