I have a 1988 85 Hp Force 856X8a.
I am replacing just about everything and the switch is included in that also. The only issue is that on the switch is 2 M's. I know from the diagram 1 is + the other is ground.

On the engine is a label that states the color is white and blue. I have both at the old switch. Also there is a white wire that goes to the kill switch too on both of these.
Problem is there is no indication of + or - .
I hooked up a wire to ground at the battery, battery was not installed, The with was 0 ohms and the blue was 1 meg ohm. I am going to assume the 0 ohm which is white is the correct ground.

Any comments as to am I right or will I blow up something?

BTW the switch did turn the engine and click the selanoid so I thing I got that correct at least.

Re: Ignition switch replacement

I believe that the 2 "m" terminals are interchangable, and acts as a kill switch when the key is in the off position. They just connect to each other when the key is off. My manuals confirm this.

Re: Ignition switch replacement

Roscoe is right. The magneto reqires a path to ground to kill the spark. These switches just connect one "M" to your magneto, the other to a ground. On your diagram, you are correct, so wire it up the way the diagram shows.
