90 HP Force Bad Power Head

I've been told my 1994 Force Power Head is bad (50 lbs compression and scoring on #1). The shop wants $3K to put on a new one. I'm a rookie - should I find a used motor somewhere (where?), let them put the new one on, or should I do it myself? I have some mechanic experience - just not on boat motors. Where would I buy a new power head? <br />Thanks,<br />Biplane

Well, you can get a rebuilt powerhead here on iboats for under $2000, link at bottom of page.<br /><br />But for $2-3000 you should be able to get a decent used late model motor. Or you should be able to find a 3-5 year old Merc or ??? for $3-5000.<br /><br />Iboats also has some 2004 demo motors for sale, $5-6000.<br /><br />You should be able to part out the Force for $800 - $1000 on ebay.<br /><br />Thats what I would do.<br /><br />If its older than a 1996, I would definitely not stick any money into it.
