Johnson 40HP Seahorse - Runs Hard, Stops won't Start

My father inlaw has a Johnson 40HP Seahorse with two stick remote control, unsure of the year (old).

The engine (on the trailer) will start, idle and rev well with good water pressure. When in the water the engine will again start, idle and rev well. However after ten minutes of running, open throttle, the engine will die, and is unable to be started. My father inlaw suspects water making its way through the jacket and into the head. Any thoughts, places to start.

Hello chryslernovice. You might want to start with a compression test. Could be a blown head gasket. Also you might want to post this under Johnson forum. YOu will probably find more people there familiar with this type of motor
