My starter is spinning up just fine, but is not popping up to align with flywheel. I have lubed the pinion gear as per service manual, still no joy. Anyone have any suggestions?

torp

If you turn the gear on the starter by hand will it go up to the flywheel. If not either the gear or the bendix on the starter is stripped.

Yes you can manually move the gear up. It just won't pop up when you are trying to crank it.

Is your starter turning fast enough? Did you clean the shaft really well and lube it with LIGHT oil? Gunky, heavy grease prevents proper pinion gear functioning.

cleaned it, lubed as per factory service manual. no idea how fast it is supposed to turn...don't have a clamp-on ammeter to check current under load. i took it to starter/generator shop. Gonna charge me $95 for rebuild with 1 year warranty....

torp
