Hello to all. I'm new to this site, but have really enjoyed reading all of the post and comments for sometime now. Now to my problem and question. I recently purchased an '87 50hp. Force, and am not familiar at all with this engine(I've always owned Mercury's). The engine runs great, and performs well on a 17' aluminum bass boat. However, the depth finder shuts down constantly if RPM's are higher than idle. After doing a diagnostic check on the depth finder, it showed "high voltage detected". I understand that this engine has a rectifier, instead of a regulator. My question is this, can I safely install a voltage regulator to drop the voltage output. Thanks in advance.

Yes you can, and it is adviseable, as it will surely fry your battery on a long, daytime trip. The battery will charge at the 18+ VDC that the stator delivers.<br />I used the board out of an old automatic battery charger. It came ready-made.
