Thought that might get your attention,,,,,,I read numerous posts about this but haven't come upon a definative answer yet. I have a 1989 85 hp Force o/b with tilt/trim......Since its new to me I don't know if this is an old problem or something new (if sh-t is gonna happen its certainly gonna happen to moi) anyway I am able to use the tilt to get the motor up :) but it immediately starts a slow steady decay ;( I can even hear something groaning (I'm not making that up), as it moves a 1/32 of an inch at a time...takes about 10 minutes to go from fully up to limp as a chimp.....is there an easy fix for this?..or even if not easy how bout an inexpensive fix?

Thanks in advance

Tim

It is most likely that the tilt cyl has wear...can be fixed with a new cyl assembly.

TMD

Tim,
block up your gear case as high as you can get it,remove the shaft and nut that attaches to the top of your tilt cylinder and unscrew the head of your tilt cylinder with spanner wrench remove ram and inspect o ring if o ring is in good shape and no chunks are out of it chances are your leak down is coming from your valve body. we can help you with anything you need for this motor. thanks, bret forceparts@yahoo.com

Before you change the cylinder, which can be resealed, replace the pilot check valve seals, and check the shuttle valve o-ring in the pump body. Your pump body should have 2 allen screws, one facing toward the front of the boat, and one facing toward the rear, this is the pilot valves. New seals 2 each 7.50 at your Merc dealer pn 820719. Saerch this board at least 500 post describing how to replace the seal.
