I have searched and searched and mostly come up with info on 200 hp engines. I have tried not to be a bother but I gotta ask What is the proper plug for a 1990 20 hp rope start evinrude outboard model no. E 20CRESB ser. no. R08584881.
This is pretty definitive & up to date:
http://www.boatsetup.com/SparkPlugChart.pdf

The QL77JC4 is common and cooler, better suited to general purpose and WOT running. The QL82C is the hotter option better suited to trolling. I wouldn't bother with the L78V Surface Gap plug personally.

Hopefully someone who has one of your engines will come along and be able to tell you how they like each plug.
I have L77jc4 that a OMC dealer sold me for my 1991 Evinrude 20hp. They are not installed as I do not have a owners manual yet so I do not know the gap. My motor has a weird plug right now which is totally flat on the bottom nothing sticking down past the last thread and it is made by NGK. I cannot remember the number but the motor runs fine on them but I will change them out for the champion abaove the day I get the gap setting.

I just looked at the spark plug chart and see the .030 gap
You da man! I am cookin up a big ol mess of crappie sat. you and yours are welcome. You ever end up around lake TEXOMA area in S.E. Oklahoma give me a hollar, I can't afford ta buy you a steak but I will feed ya crappie and trout fit for a king! YOU IS DA MAN!
Racefan2 ,Im like you, mine had NGK plugs in it as well but it will have champions in it come tomarrow. I got a plate for you too! thanks for the hollar.
Racefan
At one time I read a post here (I think it was by Joe Reeves) who recomended either .030 or .040 which runs better. So I have been using QL82C gapped at .040 and I get the smoothest idle, and good top end.
