I have a 1950's 35 horse evinrude. I think it is a 55 but not sure. I was wondering if anybody knows the proper gas-oil mixture for this motor (if it is possible to know the mixture for a motor that isn't exactly identified by year). I just got a pressurized tank and can't wait to get this engine running.

Welcome to Iboats!They were made '57, '58 and '59. I think the pressure tank rules out the '59.Proper fuel mix is 24:1 with 87 octane gas and use TC-W3 outboard oil.Have a look for a model number on the nameplate. It's between the two transom clamps, up on the tilt/swivel bracket.

As I recall that's a quart of oil to a 6 gallon tank and yes they smoke.Mark

Thanks for the info. Also glad to know about the smoke. That would have probably been my next question, if it will run.

If you run into any problems, just post in the repair forum. If the engine has good compression, then it can usually be made to run fairly cheaply and without much work. There's lots of support for these engines.Only run it in a trash barrel with water up over the bolted seam between the lower unit and the midsection. Or at the lake of course.
