My 1984 Force 50 wont shift into forward or reverse. It will crank up fine in neutral. I recently replaced the cable and am wondering if I didn't do something right. I can manually shift it into gear fine without the cable hooked up. But as soon as I put it bakc on, it feels like it binds up. Please help!

Re: 1984 Force 50 wont shift

Welcome to iboats, Woodgie.
There is a button on the throttle lever that must be depressed to engage it. This is a safety feature,to prevent inadvertantly throwing it into gear by bumping into it.
Also, this control has a high-idle feature. where the throttle handle hinges at the control box, it can be pulled straight out. Once the handle is pulled-out, you can push it as if to put it into gear and go, but instead, all that will happen is the RPM will go up, but no shifting takes place.
This mechanism may be hung-open. If so, you msy have to open it back up,and see what is holding it out.
