Steering Arm Options?

I have a 1979 Chrysler 70hp that I added a trim unit to. My Steering cable recently twisted off (broke) at the end that connects the cable to the motor, and I was wondering if a motor that came stock with trim came with a different steering arm? Hopefully the cable broke from age but I would like to make sure this does not happen again. My cable runs through the motor, then a steering arm comes back and bolts to the motor to steer. I am just curious if the arm used now does not have the rang of motion needed to turn and trim at the same time.<br />P.S. I had this in the force forum for a week with no responce.

Well, I guess there are a couple of reasons why your cable might break and one is certainly its age. Corrosion and lack of maintenance is a couple of others. The key to longevity with anything marine is maintenance and steering cables and the tilt tube that they run through at the motor is an important area to keep in good order. You will need to replace the cable and when you do make sure the tilt tube is clean and free from rust and corrosion, ensure you use a good quality ‘marine’ grade grease and that your steering cable is free to move through its full range after you have reinstalled the new cable. Fitting the tilt bracket should not have caused the initial problem but may have put a little extra weight on the cable causing it to fail when it did. A new cable should be fine providing you have installed everything correctly. Good luck.
