What type of varnish would you use on a set of oars? They don't get a lot of use, but sit out in the sun and rain quite a lot, so the main concern is deterioration by the UV rays. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Soak mine with linseed oil every few years for the last 45 years.

Beware that if you use epoxy it will seal off the wood and not let moisture breath out. Dings and stuff happens with oars and eventually water will get in and rot can be the result. Standard spar varnish and oil base paints breath and don't have this problem. Don't varnish the handle part because it is hard on the hands and tends to make blisters. Use oil on the handle.
