One of my 1997 225's gives indication that it is overheating at idle. On speed I have no problems. New water pumps, thermostats, good telltale. Only after idling for about 3-5 minutes will the buzzer sound.

check the pressure relief grommet. replace the grommet and clean the pocket. another problem is if the water pump was replaced and the rubber dam and holder was not cleaned.

Your problem is probably your Poppit Valve. (aka Pressure relief valve).

It's an easy fix to clean her up. Clean the pocket as Rodbolt notes above. This is the area underneath the grommet.

John

Re: 225 Yamaha idling hot

Thanks for the input. When I pulled the poppit out, should the longer end be installed in the motor or the shorter end? Thanks in advance

the tapered side of the valve goes in first. cant remember if its on the long or short side. look at the valve disc and you will see one side has a taper.
