Runs but without power. Pull plugs after a run and they are wet and black. Plugs, carbs and fuel pump are new also. Engine run in lake on trailer, timing steady and at proper advance on all three cylinders. Ohms of coils under flywheel are in spec of Seloc manual. Starts getting way out of spec on coils as primary side is in range but secondary side tests open on my digital meter. Is this the problem even thou spark is showing at each plug?

Grizz 429

I would pull the cover off the end of the spark plug leads and check the connection to the spring that sits on the spark plug. While you are there you can check resistance to the wire end. While you have your meter connected move the lead around to check there are no bad connections in lead or coil. Are any of the coils in spec? I would not expect all to fail. You may have the wrong spec. If only one is out I would replace it as the spark will jump any gap but will be poor quality and intermittent

test spark with a 7/16ths gap. test compression. if both are good its most likly still a fuel issue. the spaark tester can be made at home with some scraps and some metal cored plug wires avalible at any parts store.

Coils.....all check the same, that is .7 ohms on primary side and open on secondary, Wires making good contact with ends, will jump spark 1/2" but is thin and maybe weak to me.....(compared to a auto). Moving high lead around didn't make contact.

Compression.....90psi on all cylinders with throttle open and plugs out, with one pull on starter rope....same thing using starter is 95psi on all cyl. (engine cold)

Carbs.....are brand new out of the box, just pulled bowls and made sure float level was to book. One time ran it out of fuel and checked plugs and were still wet.

Grizz 429,

It's weird you get all secondary open circuit. My coils are in the 3K range and I can measure them easily.

I am also more used to cars and I also noticed the outboard spark looks weaker. Perhaps this is normal

ianyoung77,

If you have one of these engines and you can measure the secondary side, this has to be part of the answer, my manual shows a range of 5360-7240 ohms on this side.

Re: Yamaha 88 30ELG 6J8L453113

Grizz,

My motor is a 1990 50Hp with the Clymer manual giving a range of 2720-3680. Two of mine were 3300 and the third varied as I moved lead from 3300 to open circuit. The replacement was also 3300. The motor is certainly running better with the new coil but it is still not 100%. It is not a cheap part though. Perhaps you could buy one coil and see how it performs.

What model is your motor?

Ian
