well it rectifies an ac sine wave from the stator lighting coils to DC pulses. the regulator then smooths out the pulse and regulates the output voltage to something below 15 volts. is there a particular problem your trying to address?

when i try starting my boat the alarm would come on and the it wouldnt turn over. Then i notice this particular part looked like it over heated. What would cause the it not to turn over and that part to over heat?

most likly a bad battery cable/connection.<br /> you must verify if the not turning is a mechanical binding or an electrical failure.

i check all connections from the switch to the engine and them seem fine. So you think it can be a bad battery cable?
