I would like to attempt changing this tilt motor. I have a manual and average mechanical skills. I'm just not sure of the level of difficulty. Is this a big deal? How many hours would a professional mechanic charge? Are there any pitfalls to look out for that will avoid a major costly mistake? Thank you for your advice.

No biggie...just getting to the rear bolt/s. I can't remember but I "think" you can get to the back one/s without pulling the motor off the boat. Just catch the little bit of fluid that will leak out and make sure to line the pump key back up...

Hope this helps

If you have ran this motor in saltwater (which you probally have) Be very careful when pulling the bolts out they have a real bad tedency to corrode inside the hole therefor when you crank on the the heads pop right off. If you have a light heat sourch this would be good to consider.
