I have a yamaha 4 from the mid 80's i think with a long shaft. I need to know if it is possible to shorten this. If not, can I use it on a boat that is better suited for a 15 inch shaft? I know that this will reduce performance, but I want to make sure it won't cause harm to the motor or the boat. Thank you.

Re: Yamaha 4

Hi,
I'm not sure if it's an issue with this motor but check if the exhaust hole on the upper casing is too close to/under water. I have (or had) a 9.9 Yamaha longshaft and put it on a short shaft boat. I didn't realize the exhaust was right at water level and when I slowed down suddenly the wave that would usually just hit the back of the boat instead shot up the exhaust and into the powerhead, siezing the powerhead.
Eric
