Fast idle

I have a 90hp yamaha 2 stroke and it is idling at about 1900 when you put it in gear it drops down to about 1000. I think it is a 1988 but how can I tell the year and the model?

by the model number. also check the tach. keep shifting at 1900 and you will get to see how the lower unit works, soon.

I think what rodbolt is saying is that if you keep shifting gears at 1900 you are going to strip a few cogs and then, when you have to dismantle the gearbox you will see how it works. Do not change gears until you are sure that are at the recommended idle RPM. Have you tach checked to ensure that what you are seeing is in fact the truth.

Where is the model number? I will check to make sure the tach is correct. I found that one of the spark plug wires was just sitting on the plug. Maybe that was the problem.
