Model 115TLRT-L-398416Y. 1. Battery must be fully charged. Just ability to fast turn engine won't start it. 2. Carbs were rebuilt last year but didn't change hard starting. 2. To start: Give high throttle (out of gear). Give full choke. Crank, crank, crank. pause. crand, crank, crank. (many times until engines fires. Now lower throttle and engine starts instantlly. Once engine starts it runs perfectly from idel to 4500RPM. It starts and stops instantly. If I stop for perhaps an hour (fishing), must go through cold start procedures over again. Help!
Check to be sure the choke is closing all of the way. There is a line scribed on the plunger to help in adjustment. One test is to try starting with the manual choke.
also run a spark test with all plugs in the all plugs out. we gotta eliminate fuel or ign and ign is the easiest. do a forums serach on a home made spark tester. some of the mid ninties choke shutters were incorrect and most were replaced under warrenty. once you eliminate ign we can work on fuel.
I do use the manuel choke. Right now I won't eliminate any advice. However, once the engine starts it runs perfectly. So, I would think fuel and ignition are working after that initial engine firing. What is happening before that first engine firing? Let me ask a silly question.There is one carburetor adjustment. Pilot screw. What does the pilot screw do and is it's adjusment very crital?
pilot air screw meters the air and fuek mixed by the idle fueland pilot air jet, has nothing to do with cold starts. if ya wanna pay attention fine if not fine too.
Check your battery connections. Are the terminal posts clean? Are the battery connections in the engine clean? Is the battery cable run to the engine more than 4' (of cable)? Is it one full piece or spliced? I had a very similar issue. The battery cable run was 9' and there was a hidden splice 2' from the engine and the crimps were shot.

beats me Ill type it again.materiel list, 8" section of 1x4, 4ft stailess core spark plug wire. 8' section of copper pipe hanging strap, steel will work but will rust. nails. some wire and a gator clip. cut the plug wire into 1ft sections and peel back about 1/2" of the insilation on one end. nail the strap down the center of the wood. nail the other end of the plug wire to the wood about 7/16ths to 1/2" from the strap. attach the wire and gator clip to the strap. you now will have a functioning spark tester. a quick test for your problem is to let it sit whatever length of time it takes to have cold start issues. then before starting use duct tape and tape off the airbox inlets on both sides of the airbox. then if it fires right up and the ckoke is properly adjusted you will need to modify the shutters.
rodbolt. I made a drawing of your suggested spark tester. I think you mean 8" of copper pipe hanging strap rather than 8'. Give me an idea what stailess core spark plug wire is so I can ask my auto dealer or will he know what it is? My drawing shows a wire with an alligator clip which I would guess will go to ground. How are the four spark cables connected to the engine? Might take me some time to get the items and put together.
When I tape the air intakes and try to start the engine should the choke be ON or OFF. If ON, I'll be using the manual choke. I'll wait for your reply.
I hoped you would come back with that response. I just didn't want to restrict the air flow and then you come back and ask me about the choke position if the engine doesn't start. Ha on me.
if it starts normally if you dont take the tape off it will flood and die and then you take the tape off for a restart. but it will tell me if its choke shutters or something else.
OK rodbolt your're right on target. I taped the air intakes with duck tape. When I turned on the key the engine turned maybe four revs and fired right up. There must be some suction. Before flooding, the engine almost sucked the tape into the carbs. I can't try again tomorrow but will on Friday. Thank you for help up to this point. I didn't get the spark tester made but still interested in making it.
Where can I get choke shutter adjustment specifications? I have a Clymer Yamaha shop manual but haven't seen anything on checking the choke to specifications.
Visually check to be sure all of the chokes are closing competely when you manually choke the motor. There is a line scribed on the plunger to assist in adjusting the electrical choke.
