reverse but no forward

Help my 1987 70 HP yamaha wont go into forward while running at about 5ooo rpm my motor seemed to shift out of forward and reved up. tried reverse and it worked good thing cause i had to travel three miles to the dock in reverse still no forward what could be the problem

What has probably happened is the shift arm that goes from just under the bottom carb down to the lower unit has rusted almost in half. When this happens, the shaft will twist and you will lose one of the gears. I had to check to see where you was from first due to this is a salt water use problem. How you can tell is to drop the lower unit and shift the unit manually. If it shifts, then look up the hole at the shaft and check for rust just above the coupling. Common problem for Yamaha's older than 93. In 93 they went to an all stainless steel shaft.
