After wrapping a small crab trap around the Prop, while in reverse,I, could not get the motor in forward gear.I could hear the mis-meshing of the gears.I made a few 1/4 turns on the shift cable shaft where it attaches to the shift arm and got it to shift properly. After about 1 HR it started again but this time I wasn't able to fix it.Does this sound like like better adjustment may fix it,or does it sound more like a twisted Shift Rod that I have been reading others have had with this motor? A 130 HP 1992 Yamaha.<br />Thanks for responding. Carroll

Re: Yamaha shift problem

Should have bought a year newer engine and the shift shaft would have been stainless. Sounds like the shift shaft has rusted to the point that its twisted. Thank goodness you realize what the problem is. If you had taken it to a shop not familiar with Yamahas, they would have told you that the lower needed rebuilding. Lets hope the bolts on the powerhead don't put up too much a fight on removal.
