Default Oil Filter, 1987 150 HP Yamaha

I have a cartridge oil filter between the large oil tank in the boat and the small oil tank on the engine. How do you replace the filter? It seems that I would need to drain the oil out of the sub tank (large) to keep oil from the cartridge filter housing pouring into the bilge when removing the cartridge. Do I have to drain the large tank and how do you do it??? Is there a drain plug on the large tank? Thanks in advance for your replys!!Ed G.

Hi rodbolt,I am not sure whether it was added as an afterthought or not. The filter cartridge is not a Yamaha. I would like to post a picture however the boat is in Cape May NJ and I am in Bucks County PA.(about 110 miles) I know that you are pretty much of an expert on Yamaha's and if you have'nt seen this oil filter arrangement, then it is most likely not Yamaha and something probably added by a previous owner. I understand that there is a screen in the subtank and to clean it requires draining the tank. In my case because of poor access, pulling the two batteries, pulling the tank, draining and then cleaning the screen and reinstalling everything!(Yikes!!!) Maybe the filter is a replacement for the screen in the tank and would allow replacing a filter cartridge rather than pulling the tank and all the other junk! I won't be getting to prepping the boat until March at the soonest. Ed G.

Thanks Ya-Man for the subtank breakdown. The filter is not part of the subtank and is entirely stand-alone! I'll bet it is cold in Finland now!!My season starts in March hopefully!!Ed G.
