About to launch new (used) boat tomorow.
Turned key on tonight and noticed battery reading 11.8. 24 series battery. Yamaha 200 engine.
IS that too low to turn over the engine?

Re: Battery reads 11.8

The best way to know is to try starting the engine on muffs before you launch your boat. It takes more than a voltage test to say whether a battery is good or not - the guage could be wrong too.

Don't wait until you launch it to find out - I did that once and it's no fun if your motor won't start.

Hi capecliff

Battery voltage tells a story, but you must measure it at the battery with a accurate meter. Atleast do it once to check the accuracy of your onboard voltmeter.

12 V = near dead
12.5 V = approx 1/2 charged
12.7 V or greater = fully charged

To be accurate with this, the battery musn't have been charged within an hour or two.

11.8V is way too low. Not only will it damage starting components, but it will be very hard on the charging system when running. CHARGE before operating! :)
