Outboard won't shut off-- WHY???

I hot wired my 10 horse 4 stroke yamaha, but have found the keys and when i try to turn the engine off it won't, even if i take the keys out. what is my problem and how can it be fixed. I know it's probably simple but beyond me at this point. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

if you have a magneto, check the ground wire for it and see if that is disconected from the ignition switch or some where along the line is severed. if you dont have a magneto, I dont know what to do because I am new to this stuff. Hope I am of some help.
