Hello guys I have a pair of Yamaha 225 hp 2000 engines .Thay have been performing excellent until last week.We had been offshore fishing and was headed back to the house when we came upon a large patch of grass over the water I continued thru the grass ( could not go around it as it was to shallow)when we got about a 1-miloe or 2 from the grass the port engine heat alarm went sounding so I throttled back to around 2500 rpm and it apparently cooled down and the alam went off.I continued back to 4000 rpm for about 1-2 miles and the alram went of again same thing I throttled back and it cooled and alarm went off.At that point I just eased it home running around 2500 rpm.I for most sure that when I ran over the grass that theport engines sucked up grass and clogged up somewhere in the block and will not let the water circulate proper.My question is whats is the best way to flush this engine .Do I need to take out the pressure valve? and thermostants and flush it this way??By back flushing the block with the water hose?Thanks in Advance
unless you stopped and cleared any grass covering the intakes it possibly stayed on the gearbox and this was the reason for the continuing overheat. always lift the motor and check the intake is clear after an alarm condition. just stopping sometimes isnt enough to clear grass that will just float and stay wrapped around the front of the gearbox. i would suggest having your waterpump checked as several overheats could suggest a damaged pump.
Remove and inspect the thermostats and the poppet valve. Many times debris, grass, sand, etc. will build up in those areas and affect the cooling of the motor.
