Default gear adjustments on 25hp Yamaha

I have a 98 model 25hp Yamaha and cant seem to get the gear linkage adjusted properly, have tried the adjustment on the shaft linkage halfway up the leg and also the link from the tiller into the main cowl area, any tips would be appreciated.

thanx rodbolt, the problem first started after it was serviced by a qualified yamaha dealer supposedly, then it got worse after i changed the impellar where you have to undo the linkage half way down the leg. I have tried to adjust it several times and it will go okay when in the tank but on the water starts clicking or jumping either into or out of gear, i have to be close but just cant quite get the adjustment spot on. will be looking at it again later today but due to crocodiles here i wont be adjusting it in the water. So i was looking for any tips or is there another adjustment i have missed?

after a few more hours on a lazy saturday i am stumped. but being a rubber mounted motor is therea possibility it could be the rubber mounts which cant be seen have deteriorated and the cowl position has moved enough to effect the operation. i can actually get it to hold neutral and reverse by selecteing the correct position and then with moderate force move the cowl to either engage or disengage the gears? back to it and i will post any discoveries for others in a predicament like this

hello if you have that much motion in the mounts it may affect the shift. I believe the shhift cross shaft is bolted to the lower cowl. I will have to remember to look at a junk one I have at work. I usually shift the lower into reverse then bring the upper shift rod down to the revers position with the barrel nut screwed up. the screw the two together. its not like some suzukies or older chryslers where the barrel nut has right and left hand threads. those were a bit dicey sometimes. good luck and Ill try to get back to ya

Hope you had a good time out Rodbolt. Well i tried shifting to reverse, down in this case and bringing the barrell nut down as this appears to be the only way to get the union anyway. but still cant get the gears to sit just right. I did however the first time i pulled the lower assembly off to replace the leg put some weight on the shift rod, coudl this have done damage? Like pulled the lever too high in the box. I am stumped and it may be a job to take to the shop. having trouble finding a decent repair shop here.

Rodbolt, Just the latest on the issues. the barrel nut does not adjust the linkages but simply holds them together. with yamahas you must put the two linkages in the reverse position and then with no weight on either join them with the barrell. simple once you know how. If it will help contact me and i will go to more detail.Dave.
