hello

if you have that much motion in the mounts it may affect the shift. I believe the shhift cross shaft is bolted to the lower cowl.

I will have to remember to look at a junk one I have at work.

I usually shift the lower into reverse then bring the upper shift rod down to the revers position with the barrel nut screwed up. the screw the two together. its not like some suzukies or older chryslers where the barrel nut has right and left hand threads.

those were a bit dicey sometimes.
